Creve Coeur is French for broken heart. The name comes from the lake, and from a local story about a bluff and a lost love. Four hundred acres were donated to St. Louis County on June 3, 1945. Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park became the county's first park. The lake is about 320 acres. Dripping Springs is the waterfall people photograph. Most of the park sits in Maryland Heights. People still say Creve Coeur lake because that is the name on the sign.
The City of Creve Coeur incorporated in December 1949 with about 1,900 people on less than one square mile. The city adopted a charter in 1976. It grew along Olive Boulevard between University City and the lake, then faster after I-270 and U.S. 40. Today the city is about 10 square miles along Olive, I-270, and the streets that run toward Ladue and Town and Country. Some addresses sit in Parkway. Some sit close enough to a Ladue line that the comparable set changes. Office parks and quiet cul-de-sacs share a city name.
Olive is the commercial road. A lot of households time their commute on I-270.
