Louis Blanchette founded the settlement in 1769 as Les Petites Côtes, the Little Hills. It later became Saint Charles. The town flew French, Spanish, and American flags. Lewis and Clark left from this riverbank. Daniel Boone's family lived in the area and cut Boone's Lick Trail west.
Missouri's first state government sat here from 1821 to 1826, while Jefferson City was being planned. Governor Alexander McNair called a special session in June 1821. The First Missouri State Capitol still stands on Main Street. The state restored it between 1961 and 1971. The St. Charles Historic District went on the National Register in 1970.
Main Street is brick, shops, and the riverfront. Festival of the Little Hills fills it in August. Christmas Traditions fills it in December. The Foundry Art Centre opened in 2004 in the old American Car and Foundry plant. Trailhead Brewing sits near the Katy Trail access.
Veterans Memorial and Mid Rivers are later commercial corridors. New Town started in 2003 as a planned neighborhood. Frenchtown is its own older grain north of Main. City of St. Charles schools serve the historic core. Francis Howell, Fort Zumwalt, and Wentzville R-IV cover most of the rest of the county.
